Ş. ŞEHVAR BEŞİROĞLU
She is Kanun and Çeng (Turkish Harp) player. She graduated from İstanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory Department of Instrument Training, specializing in Kanun in 1986.Between 1986 and 1989 she studied harp and applied some harp playing techniques to her own instrument Kanun and Çeng. She received MA degree in 1998 and DMA degree in 1994 in Turkish Music ITU Institute of Social Sciences. In 1991 she established "Lale Ensemble", a women's group and given a series of concerts in England and Turkey. Since 1993 she has been conducted workshops, summer schools and teaches classes about the Ottoman-Turkish music at the New England Conservatory, Harvard University, Berkley Collage of Music, MIT, University of Massachusetts, Northeastern University, Princeton University, University of Chicago, Arabic music Retreat with Simon Shaheen. Bologna University in Italy and Higher Music Institute in Damascus. Since 1995, she has been attending Historical Harp Society, SEM, BFE, ICTM, MEHAT, MESA, AMIS, CIM conferences. In 1996 she performed at Killian Hall of M.I.T Ağa Han Program, in a concert of Ottoman-Turkish music. In 2005 She performed in Darül’Esad Opera House in Damascus. She also performed with “Eurasia Ensemble” and “Romeiko Ensemble”in USA. In 1999 The Cantemir Ensemble gave the first concert, which was established by Şehvar Beşiroğlu, Murat Aydemir, Hüseyin Tuncel, Salih Bilgin ve Cengiz Onural and in 2000 they made two CDs for Yalçın Tura’s book titled "Kantemiroğlu Edvarı" published by Yapı Kredi Culture Art Press. She is also giving concerts with “Hattusha Ensemble” in Turkey and abroad. She is playing reconstructed Hittites lyre and harp and giving seminars with Hattusha Seminar Group with Oğuz Elbaş, Cihat Aşkın, Ertuğrul Bayraktar and Okan Murat Öztürk . She is working EU project named “MORE” with Cite de la Musique in Paris. In 1999, she attended Harvard University Center for Middle East Studies Department and New England Conservatory Musicology and Music History Department as a “Visiting Scholar”. She instructed the Turkish Music course at New England Conservatory with Music History Professor Dr. Robert Labaree. She worked on a post doctoral project with History Prof. Dr Cemal Kafadar at Harvard University. Since 1986 she has been teaching Kanun performance, musicology, ethnomusicology, systematic Musicology, organology, music history, world music cultures, Ottoman-Turkish Music, Music in Turkey, Music and Gender, Music in Mediterranean Cultures at the ITU State Conservatory of Turkish Music and Social Science Institute Dr. Erol Üçer Center for Advance Studies in Music.
