GREGORY HESSELINK, cello

Greg has been a member of Sequitur since 1997. He leads an eclectic musical life performing as a chamber musician and soloist, while being active as a teacher and promoter of new music. In addition to Sequitur, he is a member of the New Millennium Ensemble (winner of the Naumburg Chamber Award), New York Philomusica, the Locrian Chamber Players (performing music from the past 10 years only), New Band (caretakers of the Harry Partch instrument collection), and is principle cellist of the Riverside Symphony. Other groups he has performed with include Speculum Musicae, New York New Music Ensemble, the Group for Contemporary Music, Da Capo Chamber players, the Columbia Sinfonietta, Cygnus, and as the principle cellist of the Bang on a Can "Spit" orchestra. This active interest in new music has led to his premiere of more than 100 works worldwide including concertos by James Tenney (at the Donaueschingen Musiktage) and Daniel Weymouth. In addition, he has also performed with the Mark Morris, Merce Cunningham and Nai Ni Chen Dance companies. Mr. Hesselink's performances have taken him to festivals throughout North America, Europe and in Japan, and he is a regular participant at the Monadnock Summer Festival. Always teaching, he is on the faculty of Mannes Prep., and in the summer teaches during one session at Apple Hill.

Mr. Hesselink attended the Interlochen Arts Academy, and holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and SUNY Stony Brook, where his primary teachers were Steven Doane and Timothy Eddy. His recordings can be heard on Nonesuch, Wergo, CRI, Innova, Bridge, Koch, Albany, PPI and the Point Records Labels.
