Rusen Gunes, viola
The Turkish viola player Rusen Gunes studied at Ankara State Conservatory with Necdet Remzi Atak, with Frederick Riddle at the London Royal College of Music, UK and with William Primrose at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. After occupying principal viola positions with the Ankara Presidential Symphony Orchestra, the London Royal Opera Orchestra and English Chamber Orchestra he served as principal viola with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1978-1987) and BBC Symphony Orchestra (1988-2000). He appeared as soloist with all these orchestras and worked under conductors such as Boulez, Barenboim, Hailink, Davis, Rattle, John Eliot Gardner, Solli and Tennsted. His recordings include Adnan Saygun's viola Concerto with the LPQ, Hindcmilh's Trauenmtsik and Telemann's Viola Concerto with the Borusan Chamber Orchestra, Mount's Symphonic concertante with violinist Suna Kan and the Ankara Chamber Orchestra and with the London String Quartet, of which he was a member for 15 years. Mahler's Piano Quartet and Cesar Franck's Piano Quintet with pianist Idil Biret, as well as the Boccherini Guitar Quintets with John Williams. He lives in London and is Professor of Viola at Yasar University in Izmir, Turkey.
