Tolga Zafer Özdemir, composer
Tolga Zafer Özdemir studied piano and music theory with Faris Akarsu simultaneous with pursuing his undergraduate degree in Management. He holds a Master Honour degree from “Advanced Studies in Music”, Istanbul Technical University and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Memphis where he studied with Kamran Ince, İlhan Usmanbaş, Mark Wingate and Fernando Benadon. He is currently teaching harmony, counterpoint, orchestration and composition at Bilgi University, İstanbul.
Having grown up in Anatolia, Özdemir had a chance to absorb many cultural heritages living side by side and interacting with each other. As a natural result, he has created a compositional language in which he constructs disparate musical (or even non-musical on occasion) layers, blended together in various degrees. These layers can be juxtaposed or superimposed to each other while keeping the musical essence inside such as tonal center, tempo and musical style. This new texture not only creates the “poly-phonic” music as in the sense of we know, but also “poly-cultural” music, shaping a unique form of cultural synergy.
He has given master classes and seminars both for composition on topics of his main research:
· “Ancient Middle-East Music Theory”, Music theory research on Summerian Tablets.
· “Guidelines for Tritonet”, Circle of Fifths as a musical calculator for composition from beginner to advance.
· “Harmonic Chaos Theory”, Understanding the interrelations of the harmonics inside and beyond hearing.
Özdemir’s music has been heard in numerous countries around the world such as England, Greece, Germany, Netherlands, Argentina, United States, Vietnam, New Zealand, Thailand, Australia.
