Oya Levendoğlu, Oud
She was born in 1974 in Seydisehir. Her interest in music began at the age of 8 when she started learning to play mandolin and continued with oud at the age of 14. She began her undergraduate education at Selcuk University, Department of Music Education in 1991. She graduated in 1995 and continued to pursue her master’s studies with Prof. Dr. Ayhan Zeren, who is known for his work with the Turkish music sound system and theory. She began working at Erciyes University in the Music Department of the Fine Arts Faculty in 1996 and pursued a doctoral degree at Gazi University from 1998 to 2002 with Prof. Dr. Cihat Can. Her dissertation title was “Makams from the 13th Century On and Their Evolutions.” She continued to work at Erciyes University and became full professor in 2012 in the field of musicology. Her interests include traditional Turkish makam music theory and performance, Ottoman period music sources, philosophy of Islam and sufi music, and education of oud and traditional Turkish music ensembles.
Apart from of academic activities, she has performed the oud in recitals and concerts with various ensembles within and outside of Turkey such as United States of America, Greece, Germany, Kazakhistan, and Kyrgyzstan. In 2005 she premiered the Oud Concertino, which was composed for her project by Munir Nurettin Beken, at Cemal Resit Rey Concert Hall. It is the first and only Turkish oud concertino and was part of her project entitled “Melodies of Makam for Chamber Orchestra and Oud” which was supported by Erciyes University. Her performances blended both traditional and modern styles.
She has studied with renowned oud performers and pedagogues, such as Prof. Dr. Gülçin Yahya and Prof. Mutlu Torun.
Presently, she continues to work as full professor in the Erciyes University Music Department and give concerts and recitals.
